advanced pianists to understand jazz piano chords and
the theory of how to make them. Included are exercises
for every type of the most essential chords, chord
progressions such as the II V I in every key and bass
lines to match. A bonus section of chords to the 12
bar Blues Progression appears in every key with a
bassline for the left hand. "I wrote this book for my student Tom
Heller who was getting ready to audition for the Cal State LA Jazz Band.
During his lessons I was showing him how jazz piano voicings are not
like classical voicings. In jazz, especially in big bands and combos,
the pianist is not often playing the root of the chord, it is the bass
players' job to do that. I explained to Tom the three simple voicing
positions for playing in a big band or a combo: Position I with the 3rd
of the bottom in the correct range...Position II with the 6th or 7 on
the bottom in the correct range, and Position III where both hands are
used to play large chords for comping along with the band. After
completing the book, I sent it to Hal Leonard Publishing and they
decided to publish it in 2004. It has now sold more than 40,000 copies
around the world! While this book doesn't cover every possible voicing
used in jazz piano, it is a great resource for jazz students just
starting out and learning how to play jazzy sounding cool chords within a
