January 2002 News

Los Angeles, CA-January 17, 2002

Rob works on CBS show "King Of Queens."

I hope everyone had a safe and happy New Year's and is back in the swing of things since its now mid-January. I took a couple of weeks off which was great and started out the new year with a call to do some music for the CBS Monday night sitcom "The King Of Queens."  If you don't know about the show, its a pretty hilarious half hour sitcom starring Kevin James who hosted the People's Choice Awards last weekend. The show is based in New York, and in my mind, its Kevin's wacky personality that carries the show.
The composer of the music for the show called me for a source (background) cue and we knocked it out last week over here in my studio. The show needed music that would appear to be coming out of the TV set that one of the characters was watching. The song was "Auld Lang Syne", that trad song that everyone sings on New Year's Eve. The composer sent over a CD of the vocal choir singing the song, and my job was to create a background music track that started out with accordian behind the singers and then goes into a full blown orchestral arrangement. It was a lot of fun to work on and the episode aired last week. Kevin has a great HBO special airing right now, please check your local listings for the times. He is a riot!

Second Greg Vail CD Release Party is this Friday at Kikuya.

I have to take time to thank all of you fans for making last weekend's party at Kikuya so huge, it was simply OFF THE HOOK!
Business at the club on Friday nights is booming and we have the OC jazz fans to thank.
I was pretty worried about Greg during the week because his doctor diagnosed him with walking pneumonia that Monday, and basically confined him to bedrest. I got busy over here and sent out the snail mail list to let everyone know (who didn't already) that we were having back to back weekend parties to celebrate the re-release of Greg's eMotion CD. It took a couple of days to get the mailing list in order since I hadn't sent mine out in awhile, but I wanted to be sure that everyone knew since there has been a lot of confusion in the past months about us leaving Spaghettini on Fridays and whether or not Kikuya is open again. So, to once and for all clear things up, here is the scoop: we are back at Kikuya on Friday nights where we spent most of the past 7 years playing from 8:30-12:30. We are having a blast!
So this weekend is the second party to celebrate Greg's bold independent record company move of buying back his masters and we are rocking the house starting at 8:30 January 18th at Beach and Adams in Huntington Beach. I know our band friend Patty Tucker is flying in, folks from Fields Pianos are coming down, and we will be featuring music from the CD as well as many other tunes from both our various CD's.

Introducing the Late Night Jam Session Friday nights.

Since we have been doing three sets a night for so long, I thought it would be fun to open things up a bit for the late part of the night. I tried it out last week, and it went over huge! So, now, its officially born: The Late Night Jam Session Fridays at Kikuya. Starting at 11:30p.m., I will be having guest artists from the area come up and play with the band. The session will run from 11:30 to 12:30, and then the hanging out begins.
Last week,. we had some cool folks drop by including Paul Navidad, T.J.Hudson, Kelly Anderson, and Patrick Degas. Past guests at this gig include Peter White, Vail Johnson, Jeff Kashiwa, Eric Marienthal, Tony Guerrero, and Jack Wood.  I would especially enjoy having some good blues singers come in, so if you know of anyone, tell me about the gig and bring 'em down at about 11 o'clock..we can hook it up.

New Website Feature Article this month.

Last in the news for this month is a new feature article on updating your computer software. While it may seem like a good idea at the time, well.......you should read what I have to say about it. Click the link at the top right of the page and see if you agree with me or not.

As always, thanks for stopping by, and I'll look forward to you stopping in to the gig soon.
All the best,

Rob
