I remember George
The Musician's Beatle-by Rob Mullins
And then there were two. First, we
lost John years ago. Now, George dies of brain cancer last week.
If you are a Beatles fan, this sux. It also makes you feel old. Sure, George wasn't the guy writing most of the songs for the Fab Four, but when he did, he gave us amazing work such as "Something" and "While My Guitar Gently Weeps." George was the musician's Beatle. Paul was really cute, John was pretty sarcastic, but George....he was the guy who could PLAY. I always looked forward to the instrumental breaks in Beatles tunes because I knew George would have some of that eastern sounding stuff going on. Or a really cool effect. Or a melody that just killed. George seemed to try and stay out of the news after the breakup which I thought was pretty cool. Living in a secluded mansion, keeping his life private and his groove going. I always liked that about him. I remember when they kept pressing him about a Beatles reunion a few years ago and his comment to the media was: "There will be no Beatles reunion as long as John is still dead." My kinda sense of humor. My kinda guy. George brought a ton of other influences to the band and he helped them mature...to me he was just kind of waiting for them to reach his musical level. Sure, everyone loves "Imagine" but, there is nothing cool about those chords. But the modulation into the bridge of "Something"....now that kicks ass. I always thought that George realized how much of their success was luck, and that he was more stable than the others. Probably my projection on him, but that is how I like to think of him. Thank God for recordings. George and the Beatles contribution to the world of music will live forever and never be forgotten. Now if there could just be ANY young band that sounded even close. rem
