Sometime back in the fall, I started losing track of things when the studio got quite busy here with an episode of "Cousin Skeeter" for the Nickelodeon Network. I emmersed myself in a 90 minute episode of the show which had over 80 pieces of music to be done, many of which were done here at my studio. The cues this time around were almost all symphonic music, but with a twist- Skeeter and his buddies get launched by accident into outer space, so the music had to reflect that, and it was quite challenging. One symphonic piece can take several weeks to compose, and this stuff was to picture as well.
During the same week that that project began, I started work on a project with drummer Robin Dimaggio which will be out early 2000 called "Storybook 2000." The Storybook project was to be done in eight straight days at guitarist Steve Vai's private home studio, and we were able to complete it in nine days. My boss on the TV show extended my deadline three times for the Skeeter project, and after 31 days without a day off, I completed my part of the show.
On October 3, 1999 I joined Eric Marienthal's Supergroup for a gig at the longrunning Catalina Jazz Festival. As many of you know, I've been writing music for him for a few years now, and in 1999 I started doing some gigs. This particular gig was just fantastic-great crowd over there in the Avalon Ballroom, and the band got 9 standing ovations! Soon after that, Eric asked me to join the band in 2000, and I accepted the invitation. I dont have the tour schedule yet, but will post the dates on the website after I have them. Eric and I have been working hard for a few weeks on the music for his next CD, and its going very very well. He tells me that the CD will come out in March or April of 2000.
"Joyful Noyz" is the jazzy band CD which Greg Vail and I did in 1999, and it is most like the other recordings I have done in the past. Its a live recording, and I'm happy to still be doing fun jazzy music when I can.
"Galaxy 12" is something my listeners will be surprised at, since it sounds nothing at all like anything I've done before. "Galaxy 12" was something I did as an experiment in new age/ambient music. I composed and recorded it in September of 1999. "Galaxy" is nearly one hour long, and within the two major pieces, there are over 40 new shorter pieces. I guess if I had to say what it sounds like, it sounds something like the music you would hear on the X-Files TV show. If you would like to listen to the music from "Galaxy 12", you can do so using Real Audio Player here.
"Storybook 2000" combines a lot of different styles of music and is the first CD where I wrote all the words to the vocal music. Some great styles and other artists joined Robin and I on this one, and I'm excited for when the CD comes out. Release here on PlanetMullins is set for Feb. 2000. I will have audio samples up before that.
As web audio gets a little easier to access, and bandwidth increases a bit, I'm adding more audio files to the website and debuting a new place for you to listen to music when you are online. The listening room is a place where you can listen to music from the various CD's I've done, check out music from the new CD's before they come out, and enjoy music from my online radio station KROB. We now have over 90 minutes of music online at Planetmullins, and we are expanding it whenever possible. Best listening times are later at night or early in the morning-especially for AOL users, since AOL is so crowded most of the time that it is hard for the audio to get to your computer correctly.
A lot of email comes in asking for CD versions of these early albums of mine, and I'm happy to get the mail! I am handmaking "Soulscape" and "Red Shoes" CD's here as people order them, and they are now available for those of you who want to replace your LP's and cassettes. To order, just send us an email and we will send you instructions.
For those of you interested in commentary on social trends and the new things most greatly affecting our lives going into the 21st Century, I offer Thoughts on the New Millennium where I've written about things that I feel will be most exciting and impact our future in the coming years.
I'm very glad the holidays came and I've had a chance to do some catching up here. Apologies to all of you who had to wait for some of your orders to be shipped, I just got overwhelmed in the past couple of months. I'm caught up now, and things will be smooth into the new millenium. Thanks for sticking with me, and enjoy all the new music! All the best!
