whew. that's about all i can say. whew. what a past
couple of months its been.
i thought that things were going to slow down a bit,
and they've escalated to such a pace
that even coffee hasn't been able to keep me going
the past couple of weeks.
at any rate, i feel very blessed to have so many good
things going on and happening
in my life.
spring tv season wraps.
the television season has wrapped up in the past week
which has taken a bit of the pressure
off.....i ended up working on two episodes of the
parkers as well as two episodes of a new series
on cbs called "king of queens".
thinking that i could get a breather for a couple
of days, i remember sitting down on the couch
a couple weeks ago sure that i could get back to the
greg vail and eric marienthal albums-and how nice that was
going to be to just have two projects to go with the
night gigs and the teaching day. that is a full work load for sure.
then the phone rang. it was a call for a movie project,
and those kind of calls happen once in a lifetime.
besides some b film work a couple of years ago, i've
been mostly doing background music on
tv series, and this was a real opportunity...a cable
movie for bet network....37 pieces of music
to be recorded in my studio in one week's time.
there were over 80 pieces of music total to do on the
film, and the composer on the film
had three studios running full time in three parts
of la for what ended up being two weeks instead of one.
i found myself going to bed at 3am, and having clients
in the studio at 8am for two solid weeks-
seven days a week. we finally finished preproduction
the night before valentine's day.
while that was going on, i contined playing at the
china club on wednesday nights which has been great fun.
last week, rock legend edgar winter came by and sat
in with us and treated us all
to some amazing singing and sax playing. the guy is
just AMAZING live. what a treat!
fridays at spag's.
friday nights at spaghettini have been going well and
are a lot of fun, sure would love to
find a way to fly down there to avoid having to drive
friday rush hour from la. lol.
saturdays at kikuya.
kikuya saturdays are starting to pick up now that word
is getting out that i am there on saturdays now
instead of fridays like i used to be. they have a
new piano, and we are playing hard over there.
come by and check it out. its in hb at beach and adams.
wave sunday brunch
then this past sunday, i was a guest on the wave sunday
brunch which is held live at spag's every
sunday from 10-3. thank you's go out to everyone who
came by and supported me on that one!
the wave gave away 50 of my cd's that afternoon.
after the wave brunch, i went to laguna beach to do
a meeting with the people at a new multimedia complex called
seven degrees. the facility isn't open yet, but i
will be playing at their launch party on march 4th there
in laguna. its simply an amazing facility that you
won't believe until you see it. if you would like more
info, or want to attend the launch send us email and
laura will forward it over to the people at seven degrees so
you can get a head's up.
eric marienthal cd
eric marienthal wrapped up the recording on his new
cd this last weekend and i was really bummed to be so
busy with film that i couldn't attend the sessions
or even play live on the songs that i wrote for the album.
what i ended up doing is emailing all the tracks i
had done to russ freeman the producer and they flew the parts
in in the studio without me there. i haven't even
had a chance to hear how it turned out. i can't wait to
check it out...i just love eric and his music.
yikes, im quitting bands.
speaking of eric and other bands in general, i was
bummed in january when i had to call eric and
tell him that i was going to have to leave his band
after a nice stint of a year and a half.
i have had such a great time with him i am sad that
i can't make the time to get out on the road anymore.
with the two weekend gigs, the china club wednesdays,
and my student schedule, i just can't afford to
be away much anymore. i also had to leave the hubert
laws band this month which i am sad about as well.
i am hoping that eric's new cd really gets some good
promotion this time around, and i will be curious to
see how my song "hold on" does on radio. another number
one sure would be nice!
ack! more student drama!
just when i was starting to fall into a nice groove
over at pedrini music with my students,
wrap up.
arg, i'm looking at the clock and realizing the my
internet time is over for this week. in closing,
rob feb 15, 2001
listen to the band
the sad news came that they are selling the store
and possibly going out of business.
adding that stress into the mix of everything else
sure made things a lot harder as i had
to find a new place to move everyone to and hope that
all the details could be worked out.
as it turned out, i developed a cool relationship
with the folks down the street from where
i live and now have a new teaching studio set up at
the piano factory outlet store
in marina del rey. my buddy rik over there has made
it really nice for me.
my teaching room is large and has a new grand piano
in it, and i have set up a keyboard and computer
over there so i can teach eletronic music and tv and
filmscoring as well.
the store is two blocks east of lincoln right on washington
blvd.
if you would like to set up a lesson, you can call rik on the toll-free
number over there which is 877-742-6611.
its a lot more convenient that pedrini's because it
is so close, but i sure will miss
vikki and dennis (and michele!!!) over there.
good luck to you all!
i just want to thank you all for being so nice and
patient with me while i've been so
stressed trying to cover all my bases the past couple
of months. i'm bummed i can't spend
more time working on the website these days, and hope
to have more time in the future.
in the meantime, i always give 100% when i perform
no matter how tired i am and i hope to see
you at any or all of the upcoming gigs. take care
and be well.
